UM I am currently at UW-Platteville, but I am thinking about transferring to UNC Charlotte. I will be attending the banquet in December. It is no problem answering your questions.

Ok I have a question about what kind of information you can get from the tires after they come off the car. I know they do check to see about the handling of the car from what the tires look like, who is responsible for doing that and what kind of information can you give to the crew chief from looking at the tires that come off the car?

You can give the crew chief numbers about air pressures, and tire temps. This is important because it tells him how the car is handing. Since the tires contact patch is the only thing that should touch the track, you need the contact patch as big as possible in the corners. Before a run the crew chief will get numbers about the pressure, and size of each tire so that he can calculate the tire stagger that he wants in the car. The person who usually deals with getting that information to the crew chief is the tire specialist.

I have never been injured, but I have been hit before at the track.. about 3 years ago, a late model got in a wreck on the track, and then came into the pits. Either his spotter is blind, or the driver didn't care, but he never slowed down while in the pits, and hit a group of people. We were all heading out onto the 1/4 mile to get something for our driver who was in the next race on the 1/2... I had a hood pin shoved into my back...the guy in front of me, hit his head on the air cleaner.. and the guy in front of him landed on the roof of the car... it was a mess...but I have never been seriously injured while at the track.....knock on wood...lol

I was wondering if you could explain about camber and how would that affect the tire, specifically if it would cause a tire to continually blow out, say a right front? What if any other causes could there be for a right front tire that keeps going down? If you don't mind. Thanks!

Camber on a race car is the tilt of a wheel from top to bottom. If the wheel leans in towards the center of the car, the camber is referred to as positive camber. If the wheel leans out away from the center of the car, the camber is referred to as negative camber.
The tire temp will tell you about over and under inflation, but if you watch the relationship between the front and rear temperatures, you can find some of the answers on your camber gain. Watch the rear tire temps. Get the temps pretty even or have a consistent gain across the tire. Then you know that the pressure is set properly. Then set the front pressure to the same pressure. After some laps make sure the pressure is the same as the rear, then read the front temperatures. If the middle is cold compared to the outsides, you have too much camber gain. If the middle is hot compared to the outsides, you do not have enough camber gain. Watch your wear on your tires and using the same techniques, you can see if your camber gain is right or not.
To be honest with you, it could be anything, from camber, to a problem where the brake heat melts the bead of the tire, like at martinsville, to a problem with debris. Some people could be having that bad of a day, where they find debris every time there out....lol.. hope this helps

Hello dan......great questions and answers on here. My cousin was at the arca banquet and told me that one of billy's crew members is dating frank kimmels daughter!!! is this true?? And if so who is it?? just curious....my cousin told me this and i just couldn't imagine it being true...thanx for the time

I saw Frank's daughter at the Venturini table and Frank even mentioned her sitting at the table. I'm curious as to who the crew member is and how she met him. It seems like a very unlikely pair.
